Designing the Air
Office K2 is a design-driven project that reimagines the workplace for the post-pandemic era. Through a generous timber structure, it creates a spacious and airy environment that maximizes natural ventilation and daylight, enhancing the health and well-being of its occupants. This medical office supports home-visit healthcare services within a five-kilometer radius. To promote the well-being of healthcare professionals, the building provides 25 m³ of air volume per person, significantly exceeding standard hygiene requirements and creating a healthier indoor environment.
The design takes full advantage of a 4.9-meter floor-to-ceiling height while utilizing 105 mm-wide timber members commonly used in residential construction. By employing readily available materials during a period of rising construction costs, the project achieves a sense of openness and spatial generosity with remarkable efficiency.Recognizing that staff spend long hours indoors, the office offers a variety of places to work and relax, including desks overlooking the surrounding landscape and a south-facing sunroom. Occupants can choose their preferred setting according to the time of day, weather, and seasonal conditions.
What can architecture contribute to human health and well-being in the post-pandemic era? Through simple yet effective strategies such as natural ventilation and daylighting, Office K2 explores a renewed role for architecture in shaping healthier and more resilient environments.
