Designing Distance
An interior renovation for an office located on the ground floor of a mixed-use building in western Tokyo. While the tree-lined street in front of the site provides abundant greenery, the large number of pedestrians also creates challenges related to privacy and visibility from the outside. To bring the qualities of the street into the workspace while establishing a comfortable sense of distance, the curtain was positioned approximately 3 meters inside the room rather than directly along the window line.
As a result, an intermediate zone emerged along the façade, creating a space that accommodates a variety of activities, from meetings to everyday desk work. Occupants can enjoy views of the greenery while maintaining a gentle buffer from passersby on the street. At a time when many offices remain closed off behind blinds even during the day, this project explores a simple spatial gesture: pulling the curtain inward. By preserving connections to light, greenery, and the city, it aims to create a workplace that feels both open and comfortable.
