Identity Through a Curtain of Light
This façade design was developed for a mixed-use building in Kofu City, Japan. Due to site constraints, the building’s primary elevation faces west. Located within a basin, Kofu experiences intense afternoon sun in summer and cold northern winds in winter. In response, a secondary outer skin was introduced to envelop the building. Bent steel panels measuring 600 mm in width, 3,600 mm in height, and 3.2 mm in thickness are arranged at varying angles, forming a continuous curtain around the façade. The screen softens the harsh western sun while protecting the indoor environment, and the changing interplay of light and shadow adds depth and richness to the architecture throughout the day.
A perforated pattern symbolizing the identity of the occupants is incorporated into each panel. The façade functions not only as an environmental device that shields the building from a demanding climate, but also as a medium through which its identity is expressed to the city. By merging environmental performance with architectural expression, the project explores the creation of a place-specific landscape and presence.
